Indian Domain NamesThe Department of Information Technology in consultation with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) had drafted a guideline and policy for the use of domain name in Indian languages. The Devanagari script-based languages (Marathi, Hindi, Konkani, Sanskrit and Nepali), Gujarati, Oriya, etc will be added in the new language dispensation phase by phase. In the future it can include all 22 official languages, including those using Perso-Arabic scripts such as Urdu, Sindhi and Kashmiri.

People are expecting Hindi will selected to be the first Indian language to be made part of the new Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) system. There are a few stages for this process. On first stage, government websites will be started to operate in Hindi domain names; eventually it open to registrations at the second and third level, where trademark owners, registered companies and owners of intellectual property will be given an opportunity to protect their online identities; lastly, the registration will be open but on the first-come-first-served basis. However, this guideline is subject to changes before it announced officially.
